Some of the best ways to understand Sri Lanka happen around a kitchen table.
In Kabalana, just 10 minutes from PALM, Deevi welcomes guests into her family home for a relaxed, hands on introduction to Sri Lankan home cooking. Over two to three hours, you’ll learn about the ingredients that form the backbone of everyday meals, from making your own coconut milk, to spices and how each dish is prepared in the open air beside her home.
More than a cooking class, it’s a glimpse into Sri Lankan family life. Deevi cooks the way she does for her own household, sharing stories, techniques and the small details that rarely make it into a restaurant kitchen. She is currently expanding the space too, creating more room for guests while keeping the experience firmly rooted at home.
Once everything is ready, you sit down together and eat what you’ve made. Expect a generous spread of curries, rotis, and accompaniments, and very good food.
Best of all, children are genuinely welcome. There’s plenty to watch, chop, taste, stir and get involved with, making this one of our favourite experiences for families looking to spend a few hours away from the beach and see another side of life in the south.
