When to visit the South Coast of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s weather is increasingly difficult to predict, and the South Coast doesn’t always follow the rules. But after years of living here, these are our best bets.

December – February

Sunny + hot, with the odd downpour

This is peak season on the South Coast: bright days, warm water, busy beaches and plenty happening around Ahangama.

March – June

Sunny + hotter, with a welcome daily downpour

Expect hot days, tropical humidity and short bursts of rain, often later in the day. March and April are still very much peak South Coast months.

July – September

Sunny + slightly cooler, with a downpour or two

The coast is quieter, greener and more relaxed. Rain is more frequent, but there are still plenty of bright stretches in between.

October – November

It’s a gamble

These can be some of the wettest and least predictable months of the year — but also beautifully green, quiet and occasionally completely sunny.

If You’re Coming to Surf

For more consistent intermediate surf, November to April is generally the safest bet on the South Coast.

Beginner-friendly spots such as Weligama however tend to work for most of the year.

Peak Season or Sleepy Season?

December to April can be busy. Restaurants fill up, surf breaks get crowded and there are plenty of parties if you want them. You can still find a quiet beach, you may just have to look a little harder.

For a slower version of the South Coast, come between May and November. Ahangama becomes greener and sleepier, the roads quieten down and many hospitality businesses  (including PALM) continue to operate year-round.

Watch the Rates

Room rates can change significantly through the year. If you like a deal (and don’t mind taking a small gamble with the weather) the greener months can be a very good time to come.
